VII International open competition of pianists of the Barents-region named after Gennady Vavilov

From May 3 to May 6, 2014 the VII International open competition of pianists of the Barents-region named after Gennady Vavilov will be held in Kostomuksha.

The VII International open competition of pianists of the Barents-region named after Gennady Vavilov is one of the prioritized projects for preserving and developing the system of artistic education, and also for supporting young talented performers in the Republic of Karelia and in the Russian Federation. Over the years of its existence from 2002 the competition has gained widespread appreciation in Russia and abroad.

The competition is held every two years. The goals of the competition are finding talented young musicians, strengthening the best traditions of musical pedagogics, getting to know the modern methods of teaching in musical educational institutions and also drawing attention to the music of the famous Karelian composer Gennady Vavilov, whose music has received recognition of the public in Russia and abroad. Gennady Vavilov has made a large contribution to the repertoire of the educational institutions from musical schools to the conservatory, and also to the repertoire of the concert pianists. In 2000 a musical school in Kostomuksha was named after him. Later, in 2002, 2004, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2012 the 6 previous international contests were held in that school with great success. More than  200 young pianists from different cities of the Russian Federation (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, Kazan, Novosibirsk, Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, Petrozavodsk and others), and also from the near-abroad and far-abroad countries (Finland, Latvia, Turkey, China, Belarus, Ukraine) took part in the competitions.

The realization of this project is an important stage of improving musical education in the Republic of Karelia and in the Russian Federation. The adequate musical content, the presence of music schools, the musical college and the conservatory in the Republic create conditions for holding an international piano competition on a high professional level. The competition attracts both Russian and foreign participants, including the ones from the Barents region countries, who actively co-operate with the Republic of Karelia and with the Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatory.

The VII International open competition of pianists of the Barents-region named after Gennady Vavilov is held under the aegis of the Year of Culture in the Russian Federation, with the support of The Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Karelia, Kostomuksha Urban District Administration, Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatory.
