18th International Repnikov Competition for Folk Instruments Performers “The North Cup” (April, 2017)

In April 2017 the Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatoire holds its 18th International competition for folk instruments performers "The North Cup" named after the eminent composer, performer and educator, Professor of the Petrozavodsk Conservatoire from 1974 to 2007, Albin Leonidovich Repnikov.

The name of the composer Albin Repnikov is widely known and very significant for musicians around the world. For decades, he successfully worked at the Petrozavodsk conservatoire, wrote very deep in content music and raised a lot of talented students.

The competition named after A.L Repnikov continues the tradition of the famous competition "The North Cup ", held in the city of Cherepovets from 1990 to 2006. Currently it is the only competition of such a level in the North-West region of Russia for performers on folk instruments.

The competition gathers more than a hundred young performers from Russia and abroad. Young artists have a wonderful opportunity to interact with influential performers and experts. Moreover, the competition satisfies excellent starting conditions for a successful launch of a professional concert activity.

Over the years, many of the competition winners have become famous performers and teachers, not only in Russia but abroad.

The jury, including the key figures of modern musical performance on folk instruments, such as Friedrich Lips, Alexander Tsygankov, Andrei Gorbachev, Oleg Sharov Vladimir Besfamilnov, Alexander Sklyarov, has raised the level of competition on a very high professional level. 

In different years prominent Russian musicians and professors from Gnessin Russian Academy of Music, St. Petersburg, Petrozavodsk, Rostov-on-Don, Novosibirsk, Nizhny Novgorod conservatories, St. Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, Minsk Academy of Music (Belarus), the Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, the Kuhmo conservatory (Finland), Lanciano Music Academy (Italy), Shanghai Normal University (China), as well as musicians and professors from a number of other educational institutions in Russia and abroad, have participated in the work of the jury, and in the festival programs.

Today the Petrozavodsk Conservatoire has two beautiful concert halls with excellent acoustics. The Grand Concert Hall, opened in November 2011, is a wonderful gift for the Conservatoire students and teachers, as well as for residents of the city. Without exception, all outstanding artists, performing in the concert hall, have highly appreciated its merits and unanimously called the Great Hall at the Petrozavodsk Conservatoire one of the best academic halls in Russia.
The competition continues to develop, on the recommendation of the jury, organizing committee, and well-known professors, new categories, popular in modern musical life, have been included in the competition program.
